What Are Dental Porcelain Veneers?

Many people wonder, what are Porcelain Veneers for your teeth?

  • Porcelain Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are designed to cover the front surface of your teeth, allowing for an enhanced and improved appearance that looks natural.
  • Porcelain veneers play an important role in enhancing the aesthetic appeal of smiles, as they are crafted to mimic the translucence and shine of natural teeth, providing a beautiful, polished look.
  • With the use of Porcelain veneers, it is possible to make significant changes to the color, size, shape, and length of your teeth, resulting in a smile that better aligns with your desired appearance and boosts your confidence.
  • When compared to composite resin bonding, veneers are considered to be a more permanent solution for improving the look of your teeth, offering a durable option that can last many years with proper care.

In our dental office located in Vancouver Kitsilano, we proudly offer high-quality Porcelain Veneers to help you achieve the smile you have always wanted.

Veneers are designed to provide a natural appearance and enhance your smile, which in return can help you regain confidence.

How are Dental Porcelain Veneers applied?

The dental professionals at Westcoast Smile use a two-step procedure for applying porcelain veneers in Kitsilano. On your first visit, Dr. Cheng or Dr. Norden will remove a thin layer of enamel and take impressions so that veneers can be created that will bond perfectly to address the problems you want to correct.

On the second visit, Dr. Cheng or Dr. Norden will etch your teeth’s surface with a mild acid and then apply a bonding agent. Your custom Porcelain Veneers will then be applied and held fast by the bonding agent. Veneers are long lasting (as long as you maintain good oral hygiene and keep up a regular schedule of professional cleanings.)

It is possible that your teeth could increase in sensitivity as a result of the procedure.

When are Porcelain Veneers not the right solution for our patients?

Veneers are generally not a good solution for people with tooth decay, gum disease, or for people who grind their teeth. Porcelain Veneers are also a poor solution for people with weakened teeth or with low-enamel levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are dental veneers?

Thin, custom porcelain or composite shells bonded to the front of teeth to improve colour, shape, and symmetry. They’re great for masking stains that don’t whiten, closing small gaps, fixing chips, and making short or worn teeth look even and bright.

Do veneers ruin your teeth or are they reversible?

Properly planned veneers don’t “ruin” teeth, but they do require removing a small amount of enamel, which makes treatment generally not reversible. Your dentist will assess enamel thickness and bite so preparation stays minimal and teeth remain healthy.

How long do veneers last?

Porcelain veneers typically last 10–15 years (often longer with great care); composite veneers average 5–7 years. Longevity depends on bite forces, hygiene, night-time grinding, and habits like nail biting or using teeth as tools.

Are veneers painful?

Most patients feel only mild, short-lived sensitivity during and after preparation. Treatment is done with local anesthesia, and any tenderness usually settles within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relief and avoiding very hot/cold foods help early on.

Can I whiten veneers or will they stain?

Whitening gels don’t change porcelain or composite. Plan whitening before shade-matching veneers. Porcelain resists stains very well; composite can pick up colour over time. Good hygiene and limiting frequent dark drinks keep smiles bright.

Porcelain vs. composite—what’s the difference?

Porcelain: most natural translucency, strongest stain resistance, longest lifespan; takes 2–3 visits.
Composite: placed in one visit and easier to repair; more affordable upfront but can stain/wear sooner. Your dentist will recommend based on goals, budget, and bite.

Am I a good candidate for veneers?

Ideal candidates have healthy gums/teeth and want to correct colour, shape, small gaps, or minor alignment issues. Active decay, untreated gum disease, or heavy grinding need addressing first. Significant crowding or bite problems may be better treated with orthodontics.

How much do veneers cost and are they covered by insurance?

Fees vary by material, number of teeth, and case complexity. Cosmetic veneers are usually not covered by dental insurance. Many clinics offer payment options; a consultation provides an accurate quote and a plan that fits your goals and budget.
