Patient comfort in Kitsilano

Sedation Dentistry in Vancouver & Kitsilano

For patients who feel anxious about dental treatment, oral sedation may be considered as part of a personalized care plan at our Kitsilano clinic. The appropriate approach depends on your health history, planned treatment and the level of support you need for the visit.

Sedation care at Westcoast Smile

Dental anxiety can make even routine care feel difficult. Westcoast Smile offers oral sedation for selected adult patients when the treating dentist determines that it is appropriate. Sedation is considered alongside local anaesthetic, communication, breaks and other comfort measures rather than as a one-size-fits-all solution.

The goal is to make treatment more manageable while keeping the plan appropriate for your health and the procedure being completed. If you are researching the subject before booking, our oral sedation dentistry patient guide explains the terminology, questions to ask and the difference between sedation levels.

Who may consider oral sedation?

A dentist may discuss sedation when anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty tolerating longer appointments or another patient-specific factor is making treatment harder to complete comfortably. Suitability is individual and sedation is not automatically appropriate for every person or every procedure.

  • Dental anxiety or fear that makes it difficult to attend or complete care.
  • Difficulty remaining comfortable during a longer or more involved appointment.
  • A strong gag reflex or another concern that can interfere with treatment.
  • A previous dental experience that makes additional support worth discussing.

What the dentist reviews before recommending sedation

Sedation planning begins with an assessment rather than simply choosing a medication. Tell the dental team about your health conditions, allergies, prescription and non-prescription medications, previous experiences with sedation or anaesthesia, and the specific concerns you have about treatment.

  • Your medical and dental history.
  • Current medications, allergies and relevant health conditions.
  • The treatment being planned and how long the visit may take.
  • Your level of anxiety and any previous difficulty completing dental care.
  • What level of sedation, if any, is appropriate for the visit.
  • Any preparation, transportation or aftercare instructions that apply to your individual plan.

What to expect around a sedation visit

If oral sedation is included in your plan, the clinic will give you instructions specific to the medication, procedure and your health history. Follow those instructions exactly and ask questions if anything is unclear. Sedation does not replace local anaesthetic when numbing is needed for dental treatment.

Because alertness, coordination and memory can be affected by sedative medication, transportation and post-appointment instructions may be part of the plan. The exact requirements depend on the sedation level and the dentist’s instructions for your visit.

Sedation levels and when another setting may be appropriate

Dental sedation exists on a spectrum. The level that is appropriate depends on the patient, procedure and clinical assessment. Westcoast Smile’s in-clinic sedation offering focuses on oral sedation for selected patients. If a different or deeper level of sedation is being considered, the clinic can discuss whether care needs to be coordinated with an appropriately qualified provider or facility.

In British Columbia, sedation and general anaesthesia are regulated clinical services. The BC College of Oral Health Professionals’ sedation standards outline requirements for dentists and facilities providing different levels of sedation.

  • What should I tell you about my health history or medications?
  • What instructions apply before and after my appointment?
  • Will I need someone to accompany me or provide transportation?
  • How will I be monitored during and after treatment?
  • What alternatives are available if sedation is not appropriate for me?

Our dentists and continuity of care

Westcoast Smile has a long history of caring for patients who find dentistry stressful. Dr. David Cheng, Dr. Jeffrey Norden and the clinical team can help you discuss anxiety, comfort concerns and the options appropriate to your treatment plan. Sedation recommendations are based on the current clinical assessment rather than on a standard protocol for every patient.
