    Wisdom Teeth Removal

When it’s time for Wisdom Teeth Removal in Kitsilano, Trust Your Teeth to West Coast Smile

You might have a few questions about wisdom teeth (wisdom teeth are that final set of molars that usually come in between the ages 17 to 25).

Why is it necessary to have wisdom teeth removed?

Unfortunately, several situations develop which can make it necessary to have wisdom teeth removed:

    • Patients have Impacted wisdom teeth, this means that the teeth are not coming in normally or remain trapped in the gums or jawbone. The end result of impacted wisdom teeth can be bone damage or even a serious infection.
    • Patients have wisdom teeth that come in at the wrong angle, only partially come in, or which come in when the mouth is too small to accommodate them. Under these circumstances, wisdom teeth can press against the other teeth causing discomfort or (as food and bacteria get trapped in the gums) infection.
    • Patients have wisdom teeth coming in while gum disease or cavities that make it hard to floss or brush their emerging or emerged wisdom teeth.

The good news is that, in most cases, Wisdom Tooth removal in Kitsilano is a quick procedure (around 45 minutes).  Dr. Jeffrey Norden and his team at West Coast Smile are very experienced in wisdom teeth extraction and will do everything possible to make your procedure as easy and painless as possible.

What is the Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure?

Prior to your extraction, you will be prepared using one of several possible pain management tools to ensure that your procedure is pain-free.

Once you are comfortable and numbed-up, Dr. Norden will open up the gum tissue over each wisdom tooth, take out any bone covering each tooth, separate any tissue connecting the teeth to the bone, and finally remove each tooth. If necessary, he will stitch your gums up to make your recovery easier.

Is it Painful to get Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom Teeth Surgery requires one of many possible methods of pain management. The level and type of response can be determined in consultation with Dr. Norden. For most patients, the surgery results in only mild post-surgical pain and a relatively quick wisdom teeth removal recovery time (most swelling and discomfort subsides within three or four days of removal).

Dr. Norden and his team will provide you with instructions for post-operative care and a list of foods and activities to avoid during your recovery. Most patients are prescribed pain medicine during recovery, but many recover quite comfortably with over the counter pain medicines or with prescribed pain medicine combined with over the counter medicines like aspirin or ibuprofen.

If you are starting to experience tooth pain in Kitsilano, and suspect that wisdom teeth could be the culprit, come in for a consultation at West Coast Smile at your earliest convenience.
